Restructuring sewage plan will benefit over 58,000 families

The Public Service Company of Heredia has obtained the permits from the National Environmental Technical Secretariat (SETENA), so they can begin with the public bidding to look for the construction’s financing of the new sewage system in several districts of Heredia.

It is expected that by 2019, more than 58,000 families will benefit from the proper management of wastewater. Currently, most of it goes directly to the country’s rivers and streams, and even it is circulating in pipes and is exposed on public streets.

Only Heredia’s downtown and its surroundings have a sewage system, which means that just 8% of wastewater is treated. What is even worse is that in the country just 4% wastewater is treated; the remaining 96% is discharged directly into rivers, or is filtrated to the underground by septic tanks.

It is the largest project in Heredia, and the second in the country, and it was declared of public interest by executive decree because of its great social and environmental impact.
