The process of connecting and operating Reventazón turbines will symbolically conclude today, when President Luis Guillermo Solís operates the start button of the last unit, located in the engine room.
Seven months ago, the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE) put into operation the first out of the five Reventazón’s generating units and in August, it completed the process.
The largest Central American, electric plant has four Francis units, each one generates 73 megawatts, and an additional unit that generates 13.5 megawatts. Together, they generate 305.5 megawatts of power.
The five of them produce the energy needed, according to the scheme from the National Electricity System (SEN), administered by the National Center for Energy Control (CENCE).
One of the main functions of Reventazón is to provide the electricity needed to avoid using bunker fuel or diesel. The planning executed by the ICE has enabled the country not to burn fuel to produce electricity since June 17th.
