Rice from an indegenous community will be sold in San José

Rice produced by Talamanca natives wil reach organic markets in San José. It is called Wö and it aims to promote food sustainability.

Wö will be sold by Telire’s Organic Agriculture and Ecotourism Community Association (ACEATA), which is located in the small town of Shuabb. It has 41 families. This community is supported by the Costa Rica Institute of Technology (TEC).

Carlos Robles, from the School of Engineering and Agribusiness project coordinator, explained that this rice production counts on the funds from the Regional Program from the National Council of Chancellors (CONARE).

Initially, the idea was to promote an integrated farm, however, after analyzing the need to encourage sustainability staple foods such as rice, the project’s goal changed.

The seed is planted by farmers in order to feed their families. Surpluses are sold to give sustainability to the collection center and maintain the husker.

Producers aim to start packing surpluses this month. Wö brand and packaging are ready. It is expected to offer the product in the organic market of Puerto Viejo de Talamanca and the Green Fair to be held in Aranjuez, San José.
