Rincón de la Vieja Volcano has been very active. What do you need to know?

Rincón de la Vieja volcano has been showing important activity, which allows scientists to collect inputs to know what happens in the Guanacaste colossus.

Throughout the last week, the National Seismological Network (RSN) recorded five seismic signals associated with eruptions. The events occurred between April 9th and 13th. Some extended for two minutes.

This caused the deposition of sediment and ash on the upper edge of the north wall of the active crater and lasted 220 seconds. However, it did not produce the reduction of primary lahars through the channels of the northern flank,”

said the report published by the RSN.

During the week, a continuous spasmodic tremor was registered in pulses with variations in amplitude and duration. It is recommended to stay away from the riverbeds near the volcano in case of eruption, due to the possibility of primary lahars. As well as in case of rains, since secondary lahars could be generated by the ash and material accumulated in the high parts of the volcano by past eruptions,”

stressed the RSN.

In January and the first two weeks of April, the volcano showed eruptive events, characterized by the release of steam and ash in smaller quantities.

Guillermo Alvarado, volcanologist at the National Emergency Commission (CNE) and the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE), explained last January that Rincón de la Vieja was reactivated in 2011 and highlighted that between 1995 and 1998 there were relevant events.

As a striking fact, the volcano does not have the active crater in a horizontal position. It is inclined towards the northeast flank and therefore, when an eruption occurs, the material and sound waves are perceived towards that sector.
