RSN confirmed total disappearance of the famous Poás lagoon

At the beginning of June it was about to disappear, but on July it was confirmed: the crater lake of Poás Volcano disappeared.

Before the increase in eruptive activity, the lagoon, composed of acid and hot waters, measured 300 meters in diameter and 40 meters in depth.

These types of thermo-mineral formations have been there for at least a thousand years, largely sustained by rainwater.

Its function is to prevent gases from being released directly into the atmosphere. With its disappearance there could be more presence of acid rain and a more direct ash fall.

Guillermo Alvarado Induni, a geologist from the National Seismological Network (RSN), confirmed that the lake had disappeared altogether. This was verified after the visit made last Thursday. The scientist explained that only a reddish pond reamains due to oxidation.

Currently, the volcano has two mouths where material comes out and two burners.

The eruptive activity remains constant. However the most striking aspect has been the internal earthquakes that have occurred in recent days.
