Rural owners’ debts will be condoned

With 47 votes in favor, the Congress approved in first reading an authorization to the Rural Development Institute (Inder) to condone rural owners’ debts acquired by the granting of land with the former Agrarian Development Institute (IDA) before December 31st, 2005.

Under the initiative, debts equal to or less than 6 million colones will be 100% condoned and debts that go beyond 6 million colones will be forgiven by 50%.

It is a matter of justice, not abuse, such as luxury pension or the sky-high salaries of some officials,

declared legislator Mario Redondo.

The benefit households with agricultural plots have failed to honor their commitments because their properties are located in places with no infrastructure to get their crops, they lack basic services and the lands have been affected by climate changes and pests.

Currently, there are 3,165 beneficiaries, including individuals and legal entities, that carry debt from before 2005.
