San José will fight against street harassment. This was announced by the Municipality to present a campaign that consists of messages recorded on video, in which men are urged not to make “compliments”, whistle or give harassing looks towards women in public spaces and streets.
In fact, only in November the Public Force arrested more than 12 men for this type of harassment.
The city council indicated that it will guide women so that they can file the complaints with the authorities.
“We want the city of San José to be a city for the people, that’s why we are starting today with a campaign against street harassment. We want a city with more respect, with more education, so let’s not hurt our social peace with offensive phrases towards women,” said Johnny Araya, mayor of San José.
Data from the Statistics School of the University of Costa Rica in 2015 indicate that 61.7% of women have been victims of street sexual harassment.
The types of harassment most experienced by women in our country are: whistles (36.2%) and honking the horn of a vehicle with sexual intentions (37.7%), while men experienced cat calls to a greater extent ( 14.2%) and that they stare at an intimate part (13.5%).
