San Juan de Dios Hospital is looking for O postive blood donors due to the shortage of this type of blood in the Blood Bank.
Ana Lucía Valerín, head of the Bank, explained that for an optimal functioning, 30 donors are required daily and only eight are coming. The low number puts at risk the performance of complex surgical and medical procedures, transfusions in patients of the Hematology Service, among others.
According to the microbiologist, one of the problems they face is that patients who have a scheduled surgery are requested from two to four donors (depending on the complexity of the procedure) to replace the blood that will be used. However, they are not showing up.
This is not a mandatory requirement, but it is a way to collaborate with the blood pool. It is important to emphasize that the same donor can help four different patients.
