The 68th anniversary of the abolition of the army in Costa Rica was celebrated in a special ceremony in La Democracia Square. The occasion also celebrated the sculptural ensemble in honor of former President José Figueres Ferrer, that was returned to its original place.
The monument was restored after nine years of being removed from the Square and is now being relocated, as established by a decree by the President of the Republic in December 2014.
The piece of art consists of 4 sculptures: one of Don José Figueres, one of a girl with a violin, one of a child with a book and the fourth is a mallet.
President Luis Guillermo Solís, along with several school children, placed a wreath before the monument.
During the ceremony, the President and the Minister of Culture, Silvie Durán, signed a decree renaming the well-known Plaza de la Democracia, which will now be known as Plaza de la Democracia and Abolición del Ejército.
