Security Minister defends police action at the UCR

Public Security Minister Michael Soto defended the action of the Public Force to disperse a blockade on Wednesday night in San Pedro de Montes de Oca, which ended with arrests on the campus of the University of Costa Rica (UCR).

Through a video shared by the Ministry of Public Security (MSP), Soto agreed with the officers who lifted the blockade in front of the local Catholic church, as ordered by President Alvarado, before any attempt to interrupt the transit in the framework of the demonstrations of the national strike called by the public sector against the fiscal plan.

Faced with the facts, in a matter of minutes, President Carlos Alvarado reacted immediately and ordered an investigation of the case, after the rector of the University of Costa Rica, Henning Jensen, called for a demonstration in front of the Presidential House to defend university autonomy.

Police sources confirmed to CRHoy that Soto met with the officers who participated in the operation to ensure free transit – as established by the Political Constitution – and agreed with their actions.
