The National Animal Health Service (SENASA) had to remove five horses during the Tope Nacional celebrations carried out this Tuesday in downtown San José.
According to the report, during the operations there were cases of horsemen giving improper treatment to the animals, some of which had wounds.
Similarly, SENASA reported that they prevented 20 horses from participating in the activity due to situations of abuse.
Despite the operations carried out, it was not possible to prevent some people from acting inappropriately and abusing the animals.
A photograph in social netwroks exemplifies a case of mistreatment against a horse that remains lying on the road while four people, including one with liquor, pose on top of it.
In this type of event any person can ride a horse… We are concerned about all the animals that are rented by people who do not know anything about them and only show up to drink. There is no control here. For example, one does not allow a drunken person to rent a car. Then why is a person who ingests alcohol allowed to handle an animal? Where there is money, regulations don’t apply, and the Tope should be regulated,”
said Marilú Arroyo, director of the Animal Welfare Network.
Arroyo also said they have asked SENASA to include the organization as part of the staff for these activities, but they have not received a positive response.
