sexual extortion on the Internet is increasing

The Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) recorded a total of 80 cases of sexual extortion over the internet in the last year.

According to Erick Lewis, director of the OIJ Computer Crime Unit, criminals are foreign gangs that, through social networks, convince men to keep “virtual sex.”

They use newly-created Facebook profiles, there are no friends in common and without any kind of relationship they start to interact. After that, they switch to video calling systems, such as Skype, where they are filmed,

informed Lewis.

They come from other countries and the techniques are used by other criminals. The recommendation is not to pay anything,

said the specialist who described the problem as global scams.

In 2015, there were only 21 cases, that’s the reason why authorities are worried by their increase.

According to Lewis, extortions range from $ 100 to $ 5000 according to the profile of the victim, however, there is not a established pattern, but the common victims men aged 25 to 35 years old.
