SINAC could receive support staff from NGOs

September 3, 2017 by Staff News Writer

The National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC) could receive support staff from non-governmental organizations (NGOs) for conservation areas.

This is the proposal set in a bill that was affirmatively issued on Thursday by the Environment Committee of the Legislative Assembly.

The initiative would help to monitor and protect the national parks, wildlife refuges, biological reserves, wetlands and other areas handled by SINAC.

Some of the functions of the support staff will be the attention to the public, operational support, environmental education, talks, training, guidance to visitors , food, support in control and protection, support in control and handling of fire, and cleaning.

Legislator Marcela Guerrero, from the Citizen Action Party (PAC), explained that the project provides great support for the work of SINAC.

Historically, environmental organizations have provided tremendous support to SINAC in terms of technical and financial cooperation. Now, with this new possibility, that strategic alliance will be deeper and will benefit all of Costa Rican society,”

said Guerrero.

In addition, it is clearly stated that the contributions of non-governmental organizations would not authorize or empower them to intervene in decision-making, policy definition, conservation criteria, or protection and security.
