Next January will be the tenth anniversary of Diego Chavarría being tied to a wheelchair. In 2007 a drunk driver hit him while he was riding his motorcycle and caused him a devastating injury.
But Diego is just a sad example of the combination of alcohol with the steering wheel. In 2015 a total of 248 people died while driving drunk.
However, who are the most likely to die while driving under the influence of alcohol? The Institute on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (IAFA) conducted a study and concluded that single men aged 20 to 40 years from the Central Valley have more possibilities to die and cause serious accidents by driving under the influence of alcohol and other drugs.
In the world, 1.3 million people die each year in traffic accidents, but 50 million people survive,
stated Norman Cordero, sociologist and researcher on road safety issues at the National Institute of Insurance (INS). As a result, deaths and injuries are not the only concern. The psychological and social rehabilitation of the survivors also requires an arduous process.
