On Tuesday, the legislators unanimously approved a motion to progressively eliminate single-use plastic from the Legislative Assembly.
Examples of this type of materials are disposable cups, plates, and utensils, bags, straws, and any packaging or product that is used once and then thrown away. They will replace the plastic with renewable and compostable materials.
The motion passed was presented by Paola Vega, from the Citizen Action Party (PAC), who also gave his fellow congressmen a steel straw, as a sign of the change the institution is heading towards.
The struggle to replace and eliminate plastic consumption addresses one of the biggest and most serious problems facing both the country and the modern world, considering the worrying levels of pollution generated by this waste,”
said Paola Vega.
The approved motion also contemplates raising the invitation to hierarchs of other institutions and to the general public.
In Costa Rica, 110 tons of plastic are produced daily, consisting of removers, straws, and packaging bags, among others. According to the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the oceans.
