Solís hopes for early solution to conflict in Guatemala

Although the president preferred not to comment on the background of the political crisis in Guatemala, he made it clear that what happened is creating doubts about the strength of some institutions in that country.

On Sunday, President Jimmy Morales called for the expulsion of the United Nations anti-corruption chief, Colombian Iván Velasquez, two days after he announced the beginning of the process to suspend immunity for him.

Morales’ decision was suspended by the Constitutional Court of that country. Ministers of Health and Labor, Lucrecia Hernández and Leticia Teleguario, resigned their positions.

The Guatemalan president is being investigated for receiving money during his political campaign and not reporting it to the appropriate authorities.

Solís hopes that the situation will be solved in a peacefully and soon, and that Guatemala finds strength in its democracy.

He also recalled the hard blow suffered by Guatemala years ago with the imprisonment of former President Otto Pérez, designated as a ringleader of a network that collected bribes for tax evasion.
