State to plan for climate change in environmental policies

Legislators from five political parties presented a bill that seeks to have the state incorporate the variable of the threat of climate change into all public environmental policies.

The initiative was signed by lawmakers Marcela Guerrero, from the Citizen Action Party (PAC), Juan Marín and Maureen Fallas, National Liberation Party (PLN), William Alvarado, Christian Social Unity Party (PUSC), José Ramírez, Frente Amplio , and Abelino Esquivel, from Costa Rican Renovation. All of them are part of the Committee on the Environment of the Legislative Assembly.

The climate change variable would also have to be included in the policies of the National Environmental Council.

Guerrero explained that it is a reform of the Organic Law of the Environment, to make necessary adjustments that allow the authorities to plan public policies on climate change together with civil society.

New actions would be included in three aspects: mitigation, adaptation and resilience (damages and losses).

The proposal seeks to fulfill the commitments made by Costa Rica in the Paris Agreement.
