On Saturday afternoon, drivers who were traveling through Puerto Caldera documented the moment when the swell grew to the point of overflowing.
According to the Center for Research in Marine Sciences (Cimar), the reason for the phenomenon is due to storms in the Pacific coast of Costa Rica.
The swells are generated by storms in the ocean, and would be arriving this weekend, in the Costa Rican Pacific. These waves have heights above the average. Therefore, caution must be exercised due to the adverse conditions that can arise from strong currents and strong breaks in the swell at the estuaries and rivers,”
said Cimar.
According to the analysis made by the institution, in Puntarenas, waves of up to 2.9 meters high, and winds of 30 kilometers per hour can be expected.
