The national strike of public employees had an impact throughout the national territory although the Government reported that it will take legal actions against it.
In the medical centers of the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS), only emergency services are being provided. Scheduled appointments in Outpatient Consultation and surgeries were canceled. Many students from schools and colleges also did not have lessons on Monday, because some educators joined the demonstration organized by the union.
The Traffic Police reported that the traffic on most roads was completely reduced after the peak hour and for the time being they only report damage on Route 1, in the Limonal sector. In addition, municipal employees joined the demonstration.
The National Insurance Institute (INS) reported that the services in the entity remain normal.
Public employees are against the draft Law on Strengthening Public Finances, which is processed under file 20.580 in Congress. This contains new taxes and a set of measures to order public employment, in order to reduce the high fiscal deficit.
Albino Vargas, leader of the National Association of Public and Private Employees (Anep) said this morning that they hope to hold a dialogue with the Government, although he did not want to advance details of the proposal.
According to Vargas, this strike has had greater impact because it was “regionalized”, this means that local committees organized their movement individually in the cantons, provinces and unions, without a general coordinator, since they only met the established date.
