The final count of damages caused by the strike against the fiscal plan also affected the Costa Rican Petroleum Refinery (RECOPE). Although the effects were low, the company reported a fall in sales of 3.4% during September compared to the same month last year.
According to the Communications Office “the drop in sales last September was not significant compared to the sales recorded in September 2017, going from 198.25 m3 to 191,498 m3.”
Regarding financial aspects, the main downturn was seen in the average sales of diesel, where September represented the lowest level of income for the company with ₡46 billion. According to the entity, this decrease does not represent major problems, especially since the distribution continued to be carried out despite the protests.
The movement began on September 10th to protest the processing of the tax reform project. Some of the strongest pressure measures were carried out on estates of the state company with blockades by the unions to try to prevent the distribution of fuel.
Despite this, the Labor Court of Appeals of the Second Judicial Circuit of San José, ruled that the strike by the union of this is institution was legal, considering that fuel supply does not represent an essential service.
