TEC awarded for work with refugees

At least 8 initiatives from Tecnológico de Costa Rica (TEC) earned the institution a recognition by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

The institution will be rewarded for their work with refugees arriving in Costa Rica, that is, those who left their countries and migrated to another due to military, political or discriminatory issues.

One of these initiatives is an application that allows refugees to have information on the refugee process, location and contact UNHCR headquarters in Costa Rica.

In addition, another platform provides support for the naturalization test and digital literacy programs.

This is achieved thanks to an agreement between the TEC and UNHCR, which is “fundamental to develop innovative information and communication projects with refugees.”

TEC received the recognition during the World Refugee Day, which was celebrated for the first time in the country.

According to the Immigration Department, there has been an increase in the number of asylum applications in Costa Rica. In 2012, 1,167 were recorded, while in 2015 there were 2,233.
