The Executive would be willing to consider some legislators’ proposal of establishing the Value Added Tax at 13%, which the Government intends to amount to 15%. However, it insists that the original proposal is the best for the country.
This tax is, along with the income one, part of the tax package that the Executive intends to discuss and approve in extraordinary sessions at the Legislative Assembly.
Some legislators, such as Víctor Morales and Henry Mora, both from Partido Acción Ciudadana, have declared that the current percentage of the sales tax could be maintained, and in that way the opposition parties would be more willing to approve it.
The opposition was emphatic: before talking about taxes, they want to pass the bill of reduction of wages in the public sector, a law that, according to Minister of the Presidency Sergio Alfaro, would not generate greater profit and savings to the state’s money.
This generated criticism in different parties. This situation suggests that the tax issue would not be as clear in Congress as it should be. That’s way the lawmakers want to keep it at 13%.
