James Cavallaro, President of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (CIDH) declared that the commission is going through a financial crisis.
He explained that they have lost millions in contributions from member and observer countries due to other worrying situations, such as the migration crisis of Europe.
Costa Rica has made contributions of 5,000 dollars, but this year it has not made any. However, Cavallaro assured that the country contributes with the support that it gives to the system.
He added that the commision doesn’t have resources to keep its payroll and 40% of employees could lose their jobs.
He said that by announcing the crisis, they managed to raise some funds that enable them to keep their employees for a couple of months. However, in October, there won’t be any public hearings and, if they have a little more money, the last hearing could take place in November.
According Cavallaro they need actions and countries contributions and involvement to solve the crisis.
