The number of people in shelters increases to 1,100, confirms CNE

The number of people in shelters due to the recent heavy rains went up to 1,100, according to the National Commission of Emergencies (CNE). During the beginning of the week this number had been reduced 26 people; however, this Wednesday things changed once again.

Most shelters were opened in Guanacaste, the Nicoya Peninsula, and Paradise sector. Families have been placed in community classrooms, churches, and schools because their homes have been affected by floods, landslides or due to preventive measures.

Lorena Romero, director of Risk Management of the CNE, reported that unstable conditions will prevail in the country, so the alerts are still active.

The North Zone, the Central Valley and the canton of Sarapiquí; along with the North, Central and South Pacific, the authorities issued a yellow alert, while the cantons of Nicoya, Nandayure, Hojancha, Carrillo, and Santa Cruz in Guanacaste and the districts of Lepanto, Paquera and Cóbano de Puntarenas received a red alert.

The CNE recommended to those people who live near vulnerable places to be aware of the information issued by emergency bodies and official institutions.
