The President was attacked by protesters near the National Theater

A group of protesters went after President Carlos Alvarado. The incident occurred at around 11:00 on Wednesday morning, after he left the National Theater, where there was an urban transport congress.

The President had to be taken from the north side of the theater through Plaza de la Cultura to a vehicle waiting for him on the boulevard of Central Avenue. As he walked this path, he was insulted and several demonstrators tried to physically attack him. Some of them allegedly wore uniforms from the Costa Rican Institute of Electricity (ICE).

The institute indicated it repudiates these actions.

Regarding the participation of officials of the institute, the public is informed that an internal investigation will be opened immediately and, in accordance with the results obtained, the corresponding administrative actions will be taken,”

said the entity.

The Chamber of Commerce of Costa Rica also mentioned that it repudiates the disrespect and the attitude of the demonstrators before the President of the Republic.

We reiterate that these action go beyond legality or good intentions and are very far from the right to demonstrate […] First of all, the presidential position must be respected, because without distinction of their positions, actions, or behavior, under no circumstances should the president of the Republic be subject to insults, aggressions, or disrespectful demonstrations,”

said the Chamber.

The institution added:

We urge the authorities to act with a lot of determination in the face of these actions and we request that an investigation be opened and that all the rigor of the Law falls on those who took part on actions that dishonor the country and does not represent it.”
