The Turrialba volcano is swelling, according to Guillermo Alvarado, volcanologist at the National Seismological Network and the Costa Rican Electricity Institute.
Alvarado explained that more material is entering inside the volcano than what is being expelled. This material may continue being emitted slowly, as it has done so far, or may put out the volcano.
The expert warned that they are prepared to provide care and meet population needs in the worst scenario. But, he added, predicting any event will be difficult.
Alvarado explained the current status of the volcano to a group of neighbors, students and local authorities. He said it is possible the volcano triggers an earthquake, but considering that Costa Rica on average has four tremors per year, all earth movements can’t be blamed only to Turrialba.
On the possibility that the volcano ejected lava, Alvarado said it has already been doing that but in the forms of ash or pulverized rock.
