There is an investigation against the person who killed monkeys and squirrels

The Attorney General of Santa Cruz de Guanacaste confirmed that there is an investigation against the person who killed monkeys and squirrels in Tamarindo beach.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office detailed that the crime is a violation of the Wildlife Conservation Law.

However, the case was referred to the Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ), in order to identify the person, since, according to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, during the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE) officials’ inspections, it was not possible to do so.

According to Yeimy Cedeño, administrator of the Ostional National Wildlife Shelter, the person had already been identified thanks to an inspection conducted by the officials, but now the prosecutor’s office says otherwise.

Cedeño detailed that the penalty for killing monkeys or endangered species is 1 to 3 years in prison. In the case of squirrels, the fine goes from 1 to 5 base salaries, or prison from 1 to 4 months.
