The Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MOPT), the Municipality of San José (MSJ) and the Municipality Montes de Oca announced a new project to create a 12.9-kilometer bike path, which will connect La Sabana with San Pedro.
The MSJ designed the project in 2011. In March 2015, it started the road surface marking with the blue, horizontal signs and it was originally supposed to go from La Merced Park to the Legisative Assembly.
Former mayor of San José Sandra Garcia commented that they had allocated ¢ 40 million to carry out the first part of the project, and ¢ 150 million were allocated to finish it. However, Johnny Araya, current mayor of San José, said that the project was not under his administration.
I never supported that decision; it seems to me that having a bike path where there is a pedestrian route, used by thousands of people every day, was not a very intelligent decision. Even though it is not completely eliminated, it has been decided to create an alternative route so that cyclists do not have to go through the boulevard. I think it is the right decision and we support it,
Araya said.
The mayor stated that this “old” bike lane will be marked, but cyclists would prefer the new one. The marking process by the MSJ will start next Monday in 7 Avenue and 37 Street.
