Three babies infected with bacteria in Calderón Guardia Hospital

Three new babies were infected with Serratia liquefaciens and are now isolated in Calderón Guardia Hospital.

The Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS) reported that children are stable in the special room to treat patients under these conditions, which was enabled a month ago. The affected are two girls and one boy who have their prematurity in common and who are under medical supervision.

Faced with this situation, the authorities of the medical center reinforced the protocols, procedures and various measures that were adopted in December, when the bacteria was first detected.. However, at the moment a closure was not determined in the Maternity and Neonatology services, as it happened before.

Taciano Lemos, director of the hospital, explained that the different technical teams of the hospital met on Monday, in order to review all the actions taken since last December. At that time, the situation forced the establishment to modernize, in its entirety, both the Maternity service and the Neonatology service, which meant an investment of ¢ 300 million.

Daniel Salas, Chief of Health Surveillance of the Ministry of Health, said that the Ministry will accompany the groups of the hospital, in order to determine the origin of the bacteria and stressed that this time, they will be more rigorous.
