The Municipality of Tibás aims to be free from single-use plastic. The mayor, Carlos Cascante, explained that they already have a motion presented by the councilor Laura Gómez, with which they intend to establish the basis for the cantonal strategy.
The Earth Day is on April 22nd, and it is the right time to start the discussions and articulate the initiatives that allow us to develop this great strategy with citizen participation,”
said the mayor.
Cascante recalled that there is a national strategy to become a single-use plastic free zone, and they hope to join that plan.
The mayor explained that the canton suffers the negative effects of plastic. An example of this is the situation of the Rivera creek, which accumulates plastic from sites such as Coronado, Moravia and Goicoechea, which upon reaching Tibás become a kind of dam that can only be eliminated with the intervention of machinery.
The strategy talks about damage when the plastic reaches the sea, but the origin is not being attacked. Plastics are thrown in the pipes, not collected, only 5% is recycled. All this goes to the sewers that reach the Rivera creek,”
said Cascante.
The motion contemplates the creation of a canon to punish retailers or people who maintain the use of bags, but the mayor explained that this is not possible, which is why they are inviting the community to participate in the discussion to determine how they will proceed with the strategy.
