A group of divers, tourists and coastguard officers who sailed in the waters of Drake Bay (Osa, Puntarenas) saved a whale and its calves that were trapped in nets in the South Pacific.
Without thinking twice when they saw the cetaceans approach, men and women threw themselves into the water with knives and pliers to disentangle the giant marine animals.
This can be seen in a video that went viral on social media this week. The humpback whale can reach sizes up to 12 meters and weights of 36 tons. But, despite its large size, humans continue to put it at risk.
Depending on the season, this type of whale moves its habitat to warmer tropical waters. In Costa Rica, this huge marine mammal is found in the waters of the Pacific coast. Between January and February, specimens travel from California to Costa Rica where they settle in Drake Bay to give birth to their young.
