Traffic jams have become a headache for citizens, but also for rescue units of the Central Valley.
Road congestion has become a challenge, especially when one minute makes the difference in emergency care. For this reason, the Fire Department has designed different strategies to gain valuable minutes to provide a faster response.
According to Rodrigo Leandro, head of Barrio Luján Station, at the administrative level, firefighters are planning to build 2 mega metropolitan stations in San José, which will allow units to be located outside the capital’s center.
Currently, the traffic gets stuck at the gates of the station.
This happens in the stations of Barrio México, La Central, Barrio Luján and even in Pavas, but there is more space. In downtown San José it’s harder to give way to a 20-ton vehicle, so we had the idea of having 2 mega stations with exits in four sides and that allow to have more access,”
said Leandro.
The Fire Brigades also contemplate the idea of incorporating four motorcycles to the service in the Metropolitan Area. These vehicles would allow faster attention and they are already used in Europe. The motorcycles are designed by the BMW.
We will be able to give a quick response to the emergency, so we can identify needs and organize the resources to travel to the scene, because if it were not necessary to use the large units, they could return sooner,”
explained Leandro, who added they expect the bikes to be operating by mid-2017, while the mega stations project will be completed in the medium term.
The motorcycles are specialized and their operation is similar to the traditional units of firemen. Of course, there is a special uniform and the helmet is a mix between a motorcycle helmet and the helmet of the fire department.
