Traffic police had organized a public demonstration against Costa Rican president Luis Guillermo Solis, due to the lack of staff. However, after an agreement, the protest will not take place.
Homer Alfaro, secretary of the Unión Nacional de Técnicos Profesionales del Tránsito (UNATEPROT), explained that they met with Carlos Villalta, minister of transport, and they reached an agreement.
The Minister accepted, through an official missive, that officers must work in couples and just in some exceptions, they are allowed to work alone,
declared Villalta.
On several occasions, traffic officers have expressed their discomfort about working without a partner, which exposes them to risk their lives, as happened last week, when an officer managed to save his life during a shootout.
Authorities from the Ministry of Public Works and Transpors (MOPT) had said that they did not have the financial resources to hire more staff, forcing them to send officers to attend accidents unaccompanied.
