The union of trailer drivers made a protest in the streets on July 29th, demanding the streamlining of the customs’ procedures, the improvement of the road system and the services at the country’s borders, among other things, and now they have announced that they will block the border and the roads next month.
Marco Murcia, the union’s representative explained that the deadline requested by the Government (three months) in order to resolve their demands is just two days away but nothing has happened.
As part of the agreements that were discussed at the time, the government’s representatives offered to make the consultation process to modify the maximum period that the foreign trailers are allowed to remain in the country to just one month.
So far, they have said nothing about it, so on November 17th or 18th, we will be blocking the borders, possibly also the harbors and the main roads of Costa Rica,”
announced Murcia.
Central American truckers are allowed to work in Costa Rica up to six months; however Costa Ricans’ trailers can only stay a month in any country in the region.
