Train service: victim of its own success?

Approximately 17,000 people use the train service each day, especially routes connecting San José with Río Segundo de Alajuela and Belén de Heredia with Cartago.

Most of the times, passengers struggle to find a space in the wagon.

The train service seems to be the victim of its own success. The increasing and exasperating traffic congestion in Gran Área Metropolitana makes the service the only way to get home.

Guillermo Santana, president of the Instituto Costarricense de Ferrocarriles (INCOFER) is aware of the situation and said they have taken measures to increase the capacity of the service, but these have not been enough.

Therefore, INCOFER is seeking the funds to purchase 8 new trains.
