Training to better serve snakebite victims

Despite being a problem that has decreased in the country, men and children are still the main victims of snake bites in Costa Rica.

Data on the country indicates that there are more cases in the south. Men are in the highest risk group, because of their activities related to agricultural work, but 32% of children are also affected.

It is estimated that there are about 600 venomous snakebite cases annually, and one to two people die because of this.

As a result, nursing professionals and students were trained for the first time for the proper management of poisoning caused by snakebites.

The students learned about the main characteristics of snakes, epidemiology, the effects of the venom in the body, the production of anti-venom serum, as well as the rules for a basic treatment of patients bitten by snakes.
