Tropical waves will cause heavy rains until October

The National Meteorological Institute (IMN) reported that heavy and prolonged rains can be expected as a result of the tropical waves that affect the country for the rainy season, which has been present since May and extends until October.

However, the IMN noted that there is a possibility that the downpours may extend to November. As the force of precipitation increases and its duration increases, the country is exposed to the possibility of floods and landslides, which is why the population is asked to take the necessary security measures.

Meteorologist Eladio Solano commented on the possible conditions,

in November it is rare to have waves, normally the disturbances that form in November do not progress towards this part of the planet.”

There have been nine waves so far in the country, it is expected that the next tropical waves to enter the Caribbean Sea will be #7, currently located in northern Venezuela, and # 8 that is more active and associated with storms.

There are around sixty waves in this season and only 10% have been manifested, and there are possibilities for any of these waves to evolve to hurricane status.

It depends on the ocean, its temperatures and also the behavior of the wind in the atmosphere,”

said Solano.

The tropical waves are an area of low pressure, which move westward through the easterly trade winds. The trade winds are the ones that blow between the tropics. The waves are usually associated with large areas of clouds and rainfall, it can also be related to the potential development of a tropical cyclone.

The tropical waves are known as disturbances in the trade flows. This disturbance generates a type of cyclonic circulation that favors a little low pressure, presence of cloudiness, electrical storms, and strong winds,”

explained Solano. There are two types of tropical waves, positive and negative, they differ by their inclination and behavior.

The Meteorological Institute invites Costa Ricans to stay informed with official sources, the National Emergency Commission (CNE).
