Trump and Peña Nieto argue again over the wall

The president of the United States and the president of Mexico again once broke diplomatic relations and the plans to meet, as had been agreed in the White House, because again there is a discussion between both heads of state for Trump’s insistence on publicly saying that he will make Mexico pay for a supposed wall on the border between both countries. Mexico not only deems it a national offense, but its president is not willing to grant Trump the slightest ambiguity about it.

According to anonymous sources of both governments, Trump and Peña Nieto held a tense telephone conversation. Peña Nieto decided to cancel plans for a visit when Trump refused to state publicly that Mexico will not put money to build a wall.

The two leaders spoke by telephone about 50 minutes on February 20th. The Mexican sources version affirms that Trump lost his nerve. The American sources’ version affirms that Trump was frustrated and exasperated with the request of the Mexican president.

Donald Trump and Enrique Peña Nieto have not seen each other during a state visit, neither in the White House nor in the National Palace. They have only met twice.

All the presidents of the United States since the Second World War have set foot in Mexico. The personal confrontation between the presidents, which may end up affecting trade relations, is a diplomatic anomaly in the last 50 years. Peña Nieto has only five months until the presidential elections.
