US President Donald Trump’s government unveiled a plan to limit a visa program for technology-sector immigrant workers.
The plan includes measures to detect cases of “fraud and abuse” of the H-1B visa program, and a warning from the Department of Justice so companies do not discriminate American workers.
Guidelines published last week establish a clear definition of the skills programmers must have so they could benefit from this temporary visa. It was designed for jobs that cannot be performed by Americans.
The decision coincides with the American opening of the annual H-1B visa program, with a quota of 85,000 seats every year mainly in technology companies. In addition, it comes after Trump’s promises of limiting the number of immigrants working in the United States.
According to officials, employers could be tried if they favor workers who are beneficiaries of the H-1B visa instead of American people.
