Turmoil in Nicaragua’s native area due the election results

The Yatama indigenous party informed that riots took place in the Northeast of Nicaragua due to the “silence” from the Supreme Electoral Council (CSE) on the results of the elections in the North Caribbean Autonomous Region (RACN).

At least 3 security agents were injured and an undetermined number of civilians, as well as many people, were arrested in the riots, which occurred on November 6th during the night. In addition, motorcycles were burnt and the Government House of Bilwi, head of the RACN, was partially destroyed.

According to the indigenous leader, the riots started when members of Yatama were attacked with stones from inside the Government House, where the National Police kept the protesters out of the building.

Opposition groups are claiming that abstentionism exceeded 70% of the electoral roll.
