Unlike the sudden Otto’s fury that hit Costa Rica, there is a silent giant that continues to inflict damage.
For many of those who live near Turrialba volcano, it is impossible to turn the page. Its ash is threatening them.
With greater or lesser intensity, the volcano has maintained a constant emanation of material in the last months.
Eduardo Robert, dairy producer from San Gerardo de Irazú, declared that 2016 was the most complicated year, since the volcano accelerated its activity.
It seems that the eruptions ceased, but it hasn’t. The volcanic activity continues, the only difference is that the ash fall affects other areas due to the direction of the wind,
said the businessman.
Some parcels are fully affected by the ash and those who pay the bill are the animals.
Cows have died but it is difficult for a toxicologist to determine whether it is exclusively from ash,
said Robert.
According to Robert, the volcanologists and the emergency authorities do not give positive signals: the activity of Turrialba volcano will continue for an indeterminate time.
As a palliative measure, the dairy producers built shelters and replaced the sheets of zinc roofs with another material to avoid corrosive problems in the milking rooms.
