Turrialba’s serious economic impact on agriculture

According to a report released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG), ashes from Turrialba Volcano left millions in losses in agriculture. The ministry stated that 300 hectares were affected, and now milk production decreased between 20 and 30%.

Juan Rafael Lizano, president of the National Chamber of Agriculture and Agribusiness, said the impact could worsen over time.

However, the good news is that rains have started washing away the ashes. Nonetheless, he asked government authorities to redouble efforts and actions to address the emergency focusing on five areas:

1 Damage inspection and attention to recently-affected areas
2 Food for animals
3 Water deposits for animals and people
4 Access roads
5 Immediate credits

Felipe Arguedas, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, stated that crops grown on the slopes of Turrialba volcano are safe and their consumption poses no risk to human health, as long as they are washed with drinkable water first.
