Two dead in riot during opposition strike in Venezuela

Two people were shot dead and three others were injured during a protest outside Caracas, as part of a strike called by the Venezuelan opposition against President Nicolás Maduro and his Constituent Assembly.

The Prosecutor’s Office stated that Ronney Tejera was participating in a demonstration in Los Teques sector when he was injured by a firearm, which immediately killed him, but did not identify those responsible.

With these two victims, there are 99 deaths in almost four months of protests from the opposition that demands Maduro’s departure from power.

During the strike, there were clashes between protesters blocking streets with barrels and security forces, which used tear gas and shotguns to disperse the protest.

In Los Ruices (eastern Caracas), protesters clashed with stones against workers of the state-owned TV station VTV and burned a police booth.

There were also conflicts in the eastern and western suburbs of the capital, as well as in the states of Zulia (northwest), Aragua (center) and Margarita Island.

According to Alfredo Romero, director of the NGO Penal Forum, the strike resulted in at least 82 arrests, 51 of them in Zulia.

In areas of Caracas and cities across the country, many were attending the 24-hour strike, which started at 6 a.m., initiating the so-called “zero hour”.

Many streets were deserted and blocked with barricades, closed shops and buses out of circulation, in Caracas and other important cities of the country.
