Two earthquakes, registered in a matter of 3 hours, kept the South Zone in the tenterhooks.
The first of them, with 5.2 degrees, occurred at 7:15 a.m. on Monday with an epicenter four kilometers south of Puerto Jiménez, in Golfito de Puntarenas.
The National Seismological Network (RSN) made a mapping of the repercussions and explained that
it was strong in the South Zone, there was falling of objects in Puerto Jiménez and it was felt slightly in the Central Valley.”
Almost three hours later another smaller movement occurred. It was at 10:16 a.m., in that same location, with a magnitude of 3.8 degrees and a depth of eight kilometers.
The South Zone is one of those with the most seismic potential in the country under conditions similar to those registered in the Guanacaste Peninsula (location of the 2012 earthquake). These telluric movements have their origin in the Cocos plate, and given the location of the fault, the most affected areas in case of disaster would be:
Burica
Osa
Paso Canoas
Ciudad Neily
Río Claro
Palmar Sur
Palmar Norte
