The University of Costa Rica (UCR) temporarily accepted the request of four Nicaraguan students, who expressed their interest in pursuing their studies at the institution due to the wave of protests that the neighboring country is experiencing.
Young people will study via semi-annual mobility, which allows people from abroad to continue their studies for a semester or up to a year and a half at the UCR. It is a kind of exchange.
According to the teaching house, the Office of International Affairs and External Cooperation (OAICE) of the UCR has received 70 requests resulting from the displacement of university students who are fleeing from the political conflict in Nicaragua.
The remaining 66 applications will have a response in the next few days, according to the OAICE.
Leonora De Lemos, head of the OAICE, explained that students admitted temporarily would be accepted in the modality of exchange. She added that, although the deadline for the admission of semiannual student mobility expired from March 30th, there will be an extension of the registration for students to send their documents no later than July 31st, to resume their studies in II semester this year.
The applications received come from students born in Nicaragua, or from those who have dual nationality: Costa Rican and Nicaraguan.
On April 18th, the Nicaraguan people took to the streets to demand the end of a reform imposed by President Daniel Ortega on Social Security. Since then, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) has concluded that Ortega and his team have committed serious human rights violations while the people are demonstrating. There have been almost 300 deaths due to the clashes.
