On Saturday, the United Nations Organization (UN) rejected the aggressions and the discriminatory and xenophobic demonstrations against Nicaraguans that took place in different areas of San José.
In turn, through a communiqué, the organization called for the protection of the human rights of migrant and refugee populations that for various reasons, whether economic, social, political, have had to leave their countries and arrived to Costa Rica in search of help.
The UN stressed that Costa Rica is an internationally recognized country for its commitment to human rights, peace, and solidarity, and is convinced that the xenophobic expressions of the protesting groups do not represent the thinking of the Costa Rican society.
We are against all kinds of racism, intolerance and xenophobic expressions. In Costa Rica there should be no place for hatred, violence, or discrimination. The Ticos and Ticas are respectful and very supportive people and we can affirm that these hate actions and speeches do not represent the great majority,”
indicated the UN.
We strongly condemn any violence that affects civilians and express our support for the Costa Rican State in its actions against any group that endangers the country’s social peace with expressions or acts of violence and xenophobia,”
said Alice Shackelford, UN Resident Coordinator in Costa Rica.
The call was made after the events in the Costa Rican capital that left 44 arrested for street disorders that began in La Merced and ended in the Central Park, in which the participants demonstrated against migration from Nicaragua.
