UNESCO selects Costa Rican schools to deal with environmental issues

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has selected a number of schools in the country, where they will carry out a pilot program for sustainable development.

The project called “Today for Tomorrow” seeks to ensure that 11 schools, both in urban and rural areas of the country, implement a comprehensive educational approach to climate change.

For our country, it is of great importance to have been chosen within the list to carry out this global project, which means that the actions carried out by different institutions and companies are bearing fruit,”

said Rocío Solís, president of the Costa Rican Commission for Cooperation with UNESCO.

This Commission hopes that this project will serve to create partnerships between partner schools, private enterprises, non-governmental organizations and public institutions. This will make it possible to carry out real actions and commitments with the environment against climate change.

The organization chose only 25 of the 180 member countries of the Network of Associated Schools (Red Pea) to UNESCO, of which Costa Rica is an example for the rest. Without being a developed nation it has excelled in the matter of protection of the environment.

The efforts of UNESCO-associated schools’ teachers in favor of an education for sustainable development, in accordance with the highest ethical principles and the philosophy of the organization, have managed to give a positive international image,”

said Diana Borrás coordinator National network of the Pea Network.
