A beautiful gray fox surprised visitors in Irazú volcano a few days ago, when it was seen wandering through the vegetation.
Wilton Leiton works there and captured the images of the animal, which, he says, for many years was not observed in that area.
Eduardo Carrillo, a forestry engineer at the National University Conservation and Wildlife Management Institute (UNA), explained that the gray fox is one of the three species of canids in the country, along with the coyote and the bush dog.
Around 60 years ago it was common to see them in the areas near the Irazú but they went extinct and now they are observed more in the Guanacaste Conservation Area.
The gray fox feeds on small animals such as rats or squirrels and is harmless to humans.
