On Monday morning, the unions gave the details on the demonstration they are preparing for today aiming to send a warning message to the new legislators who will participate in the Legislative Assembly.
The Unitary Trade Union and Social Costarricense Bloc (Bussco), Patria Justa, and the Confederations and Trade Unions, assured that if the new Legislative Assembly continues to insist, they will prepare for something bigger than what was seen on April 25th, when there was a great national demonstration that paralyzed services.
Marta Rodríguez, representative of Bussco, added that
on April 25th the Costa Rican people said no to the fiscal combo. On May 1st we are calling on the Costa Rican people and the working class to participate in the workers’ day. So at 9 o’clock in the morning we will be in La Merced park in a demonstration that will go to the Legislative Assembly to say that we do not agree with this project.”
The unions called once again for joined efforts from the different unions of social organizations and universities against the law of strengthening public finances promoted by the Executive Branch.
Albino Vargas, secretary of the National Association of Public Employees (ANEP), said he was satisfied that the outgoing legislators did not approve the taxes in the first reading.
They continue with maneuvers and the lack of transparency of this Government on this project that is already rejected by the people. We are going to celebrate 132 years of the historic May 1st and 105 years since it was held for the first time in Costa Rica, which was in 1913. We expect delegations of between 300 and 400 banana growers, Atlantic piñeros from Sarapiquí and the South Zone, and for the first time, the workers of Alunasa will participate. We reiterate that the movement is completely peaceful, as it was on April 25th,”
