US Embassy warns citizens about deaths from adulterated liquor

The United States Embassy in Costa Rica alerted the population about the deaths associated with the consumption of liquors adulterated with methanol. On its website, it was published:

The United States Embassy in Costa Rica is aware of reports of recent deaths in Costa Rica associated with the consumption of contaminated alcohol. At this time, we are not aware of any illness or death of a US citizen due to the consumption of adulterated alcohol in Costa Rica.”

In addition, diplomats included information on the number of deaths by province and the name of the six adulterated spirits.

Deaths reportedly occurred throughout the country, including seven cases in San José, four cases in Cartago, one case in Heredia, three cases in the Limón area and two cases in Guanacaste. As a precaution, the Costa Rican government issued a national alert and confiscated 30,000 bottles of six-brand alcohol: Guaro Montano, Guaro Gran Apache, Star Welsh, Baron Red Brandy, Timbuka Brandy and Molotov Brandy. Several media outlets in the United States, Europe and Latin America have reported the Health Alert issued in the country.

According to the latest report from the health authorities, 20 people died from the consumption of adulterated liquors, most of them had alcoholism problems.
